What is Web 2.0?

What is Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 is all the Web sites out there that get their value from the actions of users.

Intereactivity is the key to web 2.0, and the idea of it is to aggregate a myriad of ways that many users can interact with a site together. The culmination of interactions is Web 2.0. ( Think of blogs, wikis, twitter, del.icio.us , Ning, diigo and other ways in which we collaborate, share and network.)

You might have heard all of these words and more used to describe Web 2.0: mashups, Rich Internet Applications, social networking, RSS feeds.  Here are a few videos and definitions to get you introduced to the concepts.

From Wikipedia:

“In the opening talk of the first Web 2.0 conference, O’Reilly and John Battelle summarized what they saw as the themes of Web 2.0. They argued that the web had become a platform, with software above the level of a single device, leveraging the power of the “Long Tail”, and with data as a driving force. According to O’Reilly and Battelle, an architecture of participation where users can contribute website content creates network effects. Web 2.0 technologies tend to foster innovation in the assembly of systems and sites composed by pulling together features from distributed, independent developers. (This could be seen as a kind of “open source” or possible “Agile” development process, consistent with an end to the traditional software adoption cycle, typified by the so-called “perpetual beta“.)”

    Hi Kirsty,

Yes – we’ll be recording all of the sessions and I’ll put the recording links up soon after the sessions finish. Also we will be doing some live blogging and opening a conference wiki – so you can look through that and make your own contributions.

    Thanks for your query.

    Tamara
